Avenches, the Roman capital
The Roman amphitheatre of Avenches is the venue of the Opera Festival, Rock Oz’Arènes and Aventicum Musical Parade in summer evenings. The Swiss National Equestrian Institute organises countless competitions in Avenches. There is also a 5-star campsite on the lakeside.
The treasures of Aventicum, the Helvetic capital in Roman times perched on a hill, still lie beneath the agricultural land. Its population of 20,000 was larger than the present day’s. The Roman museum illustrates the life in Aventicum and possesses an exceptional golden bust of Emperor Mark Aurelius.
The restored Roman amphitheatre offers 6,000 seats and has earned a new reputation since welcoming the Opera Festival, Rock Oz’Arènes and Aventicum Musical Parade in warm summer evenings.
Avenches is also the capital of the horse and the Swiss National Equestrian Institute (IENA). On the racetrack and on various grounds, this institute organises over 30 equestrian competitions a year: jumping, harnessing and full competitions.
The 5-star campsite at Avenches Beach on the lakeshore of Lake Morat offers comfort and relaxation.
