Towns & Lakes: holiday scents
Nyon, town of history and festivalsNyon, town of history and festivals
A town on the shore of Lake Geneva, Nyon is the venue of the Paléo Festival, the International Film Festival Visions du Réel and the Festival of Living Arts. Nyon also illustrates its rich Roman, medieval and classical past in its museums and castles.
On the shore of Lake Geneva, Nyon is at the heart of a vineyard and typical villages. Its climate being favourable for convalescence, the region boasts several leading-edge private clinics.
Every year in July, 240,000 people visit the Paléo Festival for six days of concerts. Other festivalgoers come to Nyon for Visions du Réel, an international film festival held in April, or to Caribana, with its warm and tropical atmosphere in June or the Festival of Living Arts in August.
Open to the public all year round, Nyon's castles and museums evoke its patrician history: Prangins Castle, the Swiss National Museum, Coppet Castle, where Madame de Staël used to live, Nyon Castle and the historic museum and the Porcelain museum.
The Roman past of Noviodium is illustrated in the Roman museum recalling the importance of Nyon, which was founded by Julius Caesar, in Roman times.
The town and its pleasant old town are mentioned in « The Calculus Affair », where Tintin, the hero of Hergé’s famous cartoons, makes inquiries in Nyon in his search for Professor Calculus.
