Rossinière, heir of Balthus

The Grand Chalet at Rossinière, where the painter Balthus used to live, is the emblem of heritage consisting of chalets with carved facades. The Mont-Dessus Alpine pastures have been given a new lease on life with organically grown plants.

In Rossinière (930 m, Pays-d’Enhaut), there are countless wooden chalets with painted and carved facades. This secular architectural heritage can mostly be admired in the village and in La Frasse.

With its gigantic carved facade, the Grand Chalet is the most striking example. It has five floors and 113 windows. It was built in 1756 by a notable cheese-maker who installed huge cellars to mature cheese loaves.

In 1977, the painter Balthus (1908-2001) honorary cultural attaché of France, settled in the Grand Chalet with his family and received famous 20th century writers, painters and artists.

Thanks to the motivation of a group of people and the financial backing from other groups, the Mont-Dessous Alpine pasture (1,355 m) has a new lease on life. The chalet and the terraces were renovated and aromatic and medicinal herbs are being grown.
